Present Continuous: Exceptions

Though it is the simpliest tense, it has some exceptions and few exceptions from those exceptions. Don't panic!!!

Static & dynamic verbs

A static verb denotes some state of an object or a person.
e.g. I believe in miracles.
We prefer to rest in some woods.
That tree seems to fall soon.

!!! Static verbs are not used in any continuous form!!!

Use simple tense instead of continuous one.
e.g. I don't mean any offense.
       She doesn't understand this difference.
       Do you know the way?

A dynamic verb denotes an action which can be performed by a person or with an object.
e.g. read, drink, stand, leave, blame, change
       dance, etc.
These verbs can be used in any tense.

But

There are some wonderful verbs among stative category.
You could have asked me:
- Why are they so wonderful?
And I would have answered you:
- Depending on their meaning, they can act both as stative or as dynamic.
Usually, these are the verbs with two meanings. One can be progressive (denoting a progress or process of somehing), the other cannot.
Study the following inforgraphic to get better understanding.
