Oh, I'm in a really big trouble. You cannot even imagine how difficult it is to define the number one mistake of all times.

#1 Adding -(e)s

Wow! I think students mix everything in so many ways with these endings. The most popular grammar topics you need to practice for avoiding this mistake:
  • sometimes students do not know the rules for adding ending -(e)s;
  • someone forgets to add -(e)s after the verb in 3rd person singular;
  • students usually missuse do and does;
  • the same goes with don't and doesn't;

#2 Sentence structure with auxilary verb 'to be'

This one is one of my favourite too.
Usually when students learn do (does) they forget about 'to be' at all. Normally, a teacher can hear something like this in the classroom:
  • I am do this exercise every day.
  • He is not play piano.

#3 Word order mixed up

Most talented students are able to mix up every possible variation of word order.

The main trick here for the teacher is to make students understand the core structure SVO.

This phrase always makes me smile. It represents the absence of mental activity in the people's minds in very kindly manner.

Meaning:

  • Someone who is mentally vacant (according to urban dictionary);
  • Something that you say when you think someone is stupid, or when someone does not react because they are thinking about something else (foun on free dictionary);
There's even a song with this awesome idiom here.

Our lives are full of challenges and demands.

As a teacher, I feel myself in constant hunt for new materials and methods. This inner state of searching is quite stressful itself. In addition to it, we have students with different needs. Sometimes to hear their needs & objectives in learning and stick to them while teaching is hard work.

Recently I have met adult people who are successful in their careers. They are aware of business procedures of goal setting and getting specific results. In other words, adult students from international companies realize what they want to achieve in short-term milestones.
  • Do we plan our lessons in accordance with our students' objectives?
  • Do we adjust our plans and methods to students' needs?
  • Do our students feel satisfied with the progress?
I think it is important to ask yourselves this question from time to time. Having some good plan for teaching, the material taken from some excellent book cannot be just good enough.

Present Continuous is not a mystery at all. But for those who are at a loss, let's take a closer look.

Usage

These are the main rules for using Present Continuous:

  • Action going on at the present moment.
'You are talking nonsense.'
  • When there are two action one of which is in process (Present Continuos) the other is a habitual action (Present Simple).
'I never talk when I'm working.'
  • Future action as something fixed.
'He is coming tomorrow.'
  • Continual process usually with the words always, constantly, ever, etc.

'The Earth is always moving.'
'She is always complaining.'

Formation

Affirmative
'I'm writing a letter.'

Negative
'I'm not writing a letter.'

Question
'Am I writing a letter?'

Lately I have made a discovery for myself.
Usually I start teaching tenses for my students with the Present Simple, which is quite logical. It is the first tense you use to say anything in English: your name, your age, where you live, what you like. I thought having students understood their first grammar structure correctly is very nice. From the very first lessons, they would know how to use at least some structure in a right way. Isn't it great? No, it's not. Believe me it's bitter truth for me too.

My favourite game to start a lesson with all the groups of students is "Guess who am I".
Reasons I love it are very obvious:
  • It is fun to play both with children and adults.
  • It is easy to prepare if you don't have one ready. Of course, I will provide you with some wonderful worksheet for that:)
  • It gives you general idea of your students' level of English. It is the main trick I love this game for. The way your students communicate shows their fluency in speach.

Good luck playing it.

Here are some ideas for possible personas to choose:

  1. You're Terminator
  2. You're Shrek
  3. You're Ali Baba, etc.
