Past Simple: Usage

We continue our conversation on Past Simple. Today we talk on Past Simple usage.
Understanding the situations for each tense is very crucial. Every tense form gives you a background information for the story you wat to tell.


Past Simple should be used in the next situations:

• actions happened and finished in the past in specific time, a completed action; 

e.g. I left school in 2003. 

• something happened regularly in the past, but now not;

e.g. When I was young, every summer I went to my grandparents.

• a situation existed in the past over some period fo time;

e.g. Julia studied at university from 2003 till 2008.

•  actions which happened one after another;

e.g. Peter opened the door, turned on the lights and thought about his empty life.
