Lately I have made a discovery for myself.
Usually I start teaching tenses for my students with the Present Simple, which is quite logical. It is the first tense you use to say anything in English: your name, your age, where you live, what you like. I thought having students understood their first grammar structure correctly is very nice. From the very first lessons, they would know how to use at least some structure in a right way. Isn't it great? No, it's not. Believe me it's bitter truth for me too.

My favourite game to start a lesson with all the groups of students is "Guess who am I".
Reasons I love it are very obvious:
  • It is fun to play both with children and adults.
  • It is easy to prepare if you don't have one ready. Of course, I will provide you with some wonderful worksheet for that:)
  • It gives you general idea of your students' level of English. It is the main trick I love this game for. The way your students communicate shows their fluency in speach.

Good luck playing it.

Here are some ideas for possible personas to choose:

  1. You're Terminator
  2. You're Shrek
  3. You're Ali Baba, etc.
